In addition to the discussion surrounding public funding in the Netherlands, this year put another topic on the funding agenda – how to tackle the private sponsorship of academic activities. The interdisciplinary area of law and technology seems to attract a new wave of questions: should tech companies fund academic events like the Amsterdam Privacy Conference? Should they even participate to such events? And if not, then what is the future of valorisation?

Eerder dit jaar schreef Willem Schinkel een essay over waarom hij het protest tegen de recente ontwikkelingen in de publieke financiering van het hoger onderwijs in Nederland niet steunt. Hij geeft nu antwoord op zijn critici.

‘Mijn brief aan WOinActie heeft, naast herkenning en inhoudelijke bijval, veel boze reacties en inhoudelijke kritiek opgeleverd. Dat wijt ik aan mijzelf. Ik heb, met de stijl die ik in de brief koos, het belang van het affectieve moment van het organiseren onderschat. Ik ging er te veel vanuit dat de brief, in het licht van mijn jarenlange participatie in discussies en strijd over de universiteit, als een productieve irritatie zou worden opgevat, maar dat is niet het geval en ik zie achteraf ook wel waarom. Het was beter geweest als ik verslag had gedaan van mijn ervaringen uit en met De Jonge Akademie, de politiek, Science in Transition, VSNU en de bezetting van het Maagdenhuis en De Nieuwe Universiteit. Ook had ik beter de bestuurders die met WOinActie meedoen kunnen aanspreken op wat hun steun nog meer van ze vergt. De brief die ik schreef kwam voort uit een combinatie van liefde voor de universiteit en irritatie bij de achteruitgang die er lijkt te zijn in de strijd erom. Ten opzichte van zowel De Nieuwe Universiteit als Science in Transition is WOinActie achteruitgang, want een onnodige, zij het als ‘strategisch’ gepresenteerde vernauwing tot budgeteisen. Maar schrijven uit irritatie is geen goede manier om productieve irritatie teweeg te brengen.’

‘[T]he common thread here is obvious: the immense, self-defeating pressure put on young scholars, at the early stages of their career, to distinguish themselves by insane quantitative criteria. It started with worthy objectives: introducing some objective indicia in the evaluation of individual and institutional academic merit – countering some of the pathologies of a purely subjective evaluation of individuals (gender, class and ‘old-boy-network’ biases to mention but a few) and reputational stasis among institutions where ‘famous for being famous’ prevented energetic and innovative institutions from achieving their due reputational desserts and even surpassing the iconic ivory towers that oftentimes rested on their desiccated dried-out laurels. There was also a normatively more complicated background to this phenomenon, namely the application to academia of marketplace principles, and thus the search for measurable indicia of ‘productivity’ and utility.’
